“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home or you.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.”
-A great quote by Charles Swindoll
In June 2013, I flew to Tanzania, Africa and successfully climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (19,333) as part of the first of the Seven Summits I am seeking to conquer. In July 2014, I conquered Mt Elbrus (18.600') in Russia and in April 2015 I climbed MtKosciuszko (7,310'). This February 2016, I will be in South America to climb Aconcagua (22,841') with 3 to go: Vinson Massif in Antarctica, Denali in Alaska and then the grand finale Mt. Everest in Nepal. If accomplished, I will become the first NFL player to ever climb all seven which are the tallest mountains on each of the seven continents
The NFL brand is the strongest in the world and although many former players have physical issues, I want to show that just because you turn 50, life doesn't have to stop. If you're not growing, your not living. I hope I can be the same inspiration to others that Jim Whittaker was to me who was the first American to climb Mt. Everest in 1963. He was quoted as saying “There are people who come up and say, ‘God, I remember the day. It changed my life. It made me want to do stuff!”
As part of my quest, I have been blessed to secure sponsorships from some of the worlds greatest brands which include Outdoor Research, Go Pro, Bonk Breaker & Dog Town Coffee. Both the NFL and NFLPA are not official sponsors but they are supportive and will be publishing my adventure to their vast audience on NFL.com, NFLEvolution.com, Newsletters etc as each mountain is conquered!
I am available for public speaking at corporate events on leadership, goal setting, accomplishment, start-up, initiative etc. Contact: Mark@MaverickConsultingCo.com
